A look at dental implants as an alternative to this traditional method of teeth replacement.
In Cheshunt, across Hertfordshire and the rest of the country, there are thousands of people who have lost teeth and are currently wearing dentures.
Whilst some may be perfectly happy, there are almost certainly many who find them uncomfortable to some extent and also, possibly, inconvenient too.
There is every chance that many of these people are also unaware that there is now an excellent alternative which is widely available for those who wish to replace missing teeth without the need for dentures.
Dental implants have actually been around since the 1960s, but have only become really popular in the last ten years or so. As technologies have advanced, this procedure has not only become more successful, with an extremely low failure rate, but has also become more affordable for a wider section of society. As people become more aware of this procedure, we have seen an increase in the number of patients approaching us at The Lodge Dental Suite, enquiring about their options.
A major concern of some people who have been wearing dentures for many years, is whether they are still able to have implants placed, given that they have been wearing dentures for so long.
Whilst most people are likely to be suitable candidates to have dental implants fitted directly, it is possible that, for some, a prior procedure known as a bone graft may be needed. The reality is that, once a tooth has been lost, the bone in that area of the jaw starts to thin and may not offer sufficient bone structure into which the implant can be placed. Whilst this may not be ideal, nor is it the end of the story for these patients. Through the use of a bone graft, for many patients the bone can be built up so that an implant can be successfully placed, leaving them with a strong and secure alternative to their dentures.
Once dental implants have been placed and allowed to integrate fully with the bone, a dental crown will be added to it to leave a replacement tooth that is extremely strong, efficient and long lasting. Never again will you need to remove dentures to clean your teeth. In fact, dental implants can, by and large, be treated in exactly the same way as your natural teeth, leaving you free to get on with your life without having to worry if your replacement teeth are about to become loose at an embarrassing moment.
