Preparing for your Dental Implant Procedure

Advice from Lodge Dental Suite’s implant dentist.

Having taken the decision to have a dental implant placed to replace a lost or missing tooth; it makes sense to ensure that you are fully prepared for the procedure ahead.

Much of the success of the implant placement comes from the many years of training that our implant dentists receive, but there are certainly things that implant patients can do to make the process as smooth and successful as possible.

General health

Whilst it is not necessary to be in prime overall health to have a dental implant, it can help to speed up the recovery time following the procedure if you are reasonably fit and healthy.

Inevitably, with this procedure, there will be healing needed at the site where the implant is placed. This will heal quicker if blood flows efficiently to this area and a reasonably healthy heart and circulatory system will help this.

There is no need to embark on a strict exercise regime, but increasing your overall exercise activity, perhaps by walking more and generally doing more manual chores will certainly be to your benefit.

Diabetes

Whilst diabetics can have dental implants placed successfully, the risk of gum disease is heightened for these patients which could, potentially, threaten the security of the implants. So if you are diabetic, you must discuss this with your dentist prior to the procedure please.

Smoking and drinking

One of the biggest threats to dental implants occurs in smokers, and heavy drinkers. Because gum disease is a higher risk in this group, the bone in the jaw can become compromised and unable to hold the implant in place.

The healing process too is slower and can result in infections of the gum and bone in the area of the procedure.

For these reasons, dental implant patients of the Lodge Dental Suite are required to stop smoking for at least a short period of time either side of the procedure.

Anxiety

Some patients are anxious at the thought of their implant procedure. This is understandable but a relaxed patient certainly contributes to a stress free procedure for both the dentist and the patient.
