If you have bad breath, it may be down to more than your diet alone!
Having bad, or even foul smelling, breath is difficult to detect yourself, but you can be sure that others will know that you have it.
If you have ever noticed that people are reluctant to speak with you, or inch away during conversations, it is time to have your mouth checked by one of our Lodge Dental Suite dentists.
Why a dentist?, you might ask. Well, despite many people thinking that bad breath originates from diet, this is not always the case, especially when the bad breath is quite offensive. It is true that some foods, such as garlic and coffee can cause bad breath, but this is usually only temporary and follows their consumption. The breath usually returns to normal when these are not eaten.
Smokers too, are likely to have bad breath, partially because of the smoke itself, but also increasingly like to be due to dental problems associated with smoking.
Whilst it is known that gum disease is responsible for a large amount of teeth lost each year, fewer people, perhaps, are aware that it is this which often causes highly offensive breath. As the gingival bacteria in our mouth eat away at the sugars and the gums, they emit highly unpleasant smelling gasses which are the cause of foul smelling breath.
Whilst some breath fresheners may help in masking the effect, they do not provide treatment and the problem will continue until you have been treated by a dentist. If gum disease is detected, then a treatment plan will be put in place.
In the early stages, gum disease can often be controlled or even reversed through better cleaning and the addition of flossing. During these stages though, it is probably unlikely that the bad breath would be highly noticeable. This tends to occur more during later stage gum disease, also known as periodontitis. This requires professional treatment and will usually consist of a deep clean, where the plaque is removed not only from the visible tooth and the gum line, but deep under the gums too.
Once your teeth have been professionally cleaned, it is important that you maintain this to prevent the problem from reoccurring. Patients from the Cheshunt, Enfield and Waltham Cross areas will benefit from sessions with our dental hygienist to help them clean their teeth correctly and help them to be free of gum disease and have fresh breath once more.
