It isn’t only teenagers who can benefit from discreet dental braces….
Dental braces have been around for a long time and are useful for straightening teeth for people of a range of ages.
It is probable though, that most people associate them with the teenage years, and, having gone past that stage of life, they probably rarely think of them at all.
It may come as a surprise to older patients that there are now a wide range of dental braces, or orthodontics, designed specifically for use by adults. Aware of the potential social stigma surrounding wearing braces, these have been designed to be as discreet as possible.
Whilst many ‘invisible’ orthodontics try to remain as discreet as possible, using tooth coloured wires and brackets; there is one orthodontic system which can be said to be as truly ‘invisible’ as is possible, and that is the Invisalign system.
Unlike other braces, the Invisalign orthodontic system uses neither wires or brackets; instead using a series of thin transparent trays which fit directly over the teeth. Most patients of The Lodge Dental Suite who have used these have told us how surprised people were when they mentioned they were wearing them. Whilst they can be seen if looking for them specifically, in general daily life, very few people will spot that you are wearing them.
The benefits of Invisalign for our patients from the Waltham Cross and Waltham Abbey areas of Hertfordshire do not end there though. Whilst the ‘invisible’ factor is high on most people’s list, it also offers a couple of other benefits; one being their convenience. Unlike other orthodontics which have to remain in the mouth and should only be removed by your local dentist, Invisalign are designed to be removed from the teeth when you are eating or cleaning your teeth.
This is a major advantage as there are no concerns about food getting stuck in the wires, and you can eat whatever you choose. Likewise, trapped food is likely to lead to dental decay and/or gum disease and can be difficult to remove even by brushing when you wear conventional braces. This problem is eliminated by simply removing your Invisalign braces before you brush and floss your teeth. You should also clean the trays before returning them to your teeth too.
Although when initially fitted, you may find the feeling a little unusual, this is not surprising as, in effect, there is a foreign object in your mouth. Our brain usually adapts quickly and most patients experience no discomfort at all after the initial few days. One reason for this is that the trays are designed especially for each patient and are made to fit your teeth comfortably, whilst still allowing them to exert gentle pressure to enable you to have beautiful straight teeth once the re-alignment is completed.
