The Sun And Your Skin – Facial Aesthetics

Avoiding wrinkles and restoring smooth skin in Cheshunt and Enfield

It isn’t often that we get to write about hot weather in this country, but, as we seem to be going through a mini heatwave as we write this latest blog; it seems an appropriate time to look at how the sun affects our skin and indeed what can be done where those effects have caused premature lines and wrinkles.

Vitamins

It should be said that some sunshine is essential for good health, and vitamin D production especially, needs light. Levels of this important vitamin are generally thought to be lower than is healthy in many people in the UK; so much so that it is often added to certain foodstuffs such as bread to ensure adequate intake.

So, some time in the sun is good, and can help with our feeling of general well being too. Having said that though, there are negative effects if you spend too long in the sun. Some of these, such as skin cancer, are potentially life threatening and medical advice regarding prolonged exposure, should be followed to avoid this.

Wrinkles

From The Lodge Dental Suite perspective, the most common issue we see is patients who have been ‘sun worshippers’ and whose skin has prematurely wrinkled, leaving facial features which makes them appear older than they actually are.  Especially if moisturisers/blockers aren’t used, wrinkles and lines are more likely for those who spend a lot of time in the sun.

Treatments

Apart from avoiding too much sunlight, there is little that can be done to avoid ageing of our skin. What we can help with though, is restoring your skin to a smoothness more akin to when you were younger. Depending on the particular issues, either Botox or Dermal Fillers can be used to help smooth unwanted wrinkles and lines. Botox is generally used for lines and wrinkles such as frown lines and crow’s feet (around the eyes), and works by injecting a small quantity of the Botox muscle relaxant in these areas. This relaxes and softens the muscles, reducing the lines and wrinkles on your face.

Dermal fillers are generally used where collagen has been lost. This is often seen in sunken cheeks or thinning lips, for example. In a similar fashion to Botox, dermal fillers are injected into these areas, replacing the lost collagen and filling out your features once more.
