Commonly Asked Teeth Whitening Questions

Our cosmetic dentist answers questions from patients from Enfield, Waltham Cross and Waltham Abbey.

As you might imagine, we get asked a lot of questions by patients, about the procedures that we carry out at The Lodge Dental Suite.

Whilst some of these are specific to each individual patient, a number of them are more widely relevant and so we thought it would be helpful to answer a few of these below.

Does teeth whitening really work and if so, how?

Yes, a teeth whitening procedure does work. In fact, it is one of the most popular cosmetic dental procedures that we offer. Indeed it can whiten the teeth by up to eight shades and can be done in just one hour if you choose our in-house procedure. It works by not only whitening the surface enamel of the teeth, but also the inner part of the tooth. This is important as the inside of the tooth naturally darkens as we get older, and nothing that we do can change this. A professional teeth whitening procedure is the only sure way to whiten this part of the tooth.

Is it painful?

No; there is no need for a local anaesthetic and you should feel no discomfort during the procedure. Your lips and gums will be fully protected to prevent them from coming into contact with the whitening agent, which is a form of bleach and which could cause burns to the soft tissues if left unprotected.

I’m a smoker – does that matter?

At The Lodge Dental Suite, we would always recommend that patients do all that they can to stop smoking. Aside from other health issues, it also increases the risk of a number of oral health issues such as gum disease and mouth cancer.

With regards to the whitening procedure though; it depends on how severe the staining is from your smoking. Certainly, you should still expect to see some improvement, but this may not be as much as hoped for if you are a heavy smoker. We will advise you about what to expect from the procedure after we have examined your teeth. Where severe staining means limited improvement, dental veneers may be discussed as an alternative.

Is it expensive?

Like all cosmetic treatments, this procedure has to be paid for privately. It is however, one of the most affordable cosmetic dental procedures available, which has added to its popularity. We do offer some finance plans though, and are always happy to discuss this with you.

What about side effects?

Generally, few patients experience any side effects from a teeth whitening procedure. A few patients though, do notice a slightly heightened sensitivity in their teeth. This is entirely natural and should only last a few days, during which time we recommend that you avoid very hot or cold food and drink, for your own comfort.

Naturally, we can’t answer all questions about teeth whitening here, but, should you have a specific question, our dental team are always happy to help our Hertfordshire teeth whitening patients and are available for consultations by calling The Lodge Dental Suite on 01992 643388.
