Keeping Your Teeth White and Healthy

Already have a great smile? Let us help you to keep it that way.

A lot of our blog posts discuss dental problems and whilst some of these relate to damage and infection, others discuss cosmetic dental issues.

What though, if you are happy with your teeth and like the way that you currently look? Is it simply ok to rest on your laurels?

The answer, we are afraid, has to be an emphatic no, as, caring for your teeth and your oral health in general, is an ongoing process that should not be neglected.

Cleaning and Flossing

It should go without saying that if you have great teeth (or, indeed, any teeth!), you should make sure that you clean them well. Despite this though, approximately 80% of us don’t floss our teeth. Neglecting to do this is to risk decay in the areas that a toothbrush can’t reach, such as between the teeth.

Adding flossing to your regime will help to reduce your risk of dental problems such as decay and gum disease, helping you to keep your own teeth for longer with minimal intervention by a dentist.

Keeping white teeth

Your teeth may currently be healthy and white, but how can you keep them looking this way? Our lifestyle choices can contribute to the way that our teeth look, and avoiding certain substances will help to keep your teeth whiter, longer.

The following products should be avoided, or at least minimised, to avoid staining.

●     Cigarettes and all tobacco products

●     Red wine

●     Excess tea and coffee

●     Darker fizzy drinks (these should be avoided in excess anyway)

●     Some dark coloured fruits such as blackberries

Avoiding or limiting these foodstuffs will go a long way to helping you retain beautiful white teeth.

However …….

The bad news is that, however well you look after your teeth and eat a non teeth staining diet; eventually your teeth will start to take on a darker appearance and may start to appear yellow.

This is quite natural and is a part of the ageing process which is caused by the internal part of the tooth becoming darker over time, giving a discoloured appearance. No amount of brushing will resolve this problem, unfortunately, and the only effective solution is to have a professional teeth whitening procedure such as those at the Lodge Dental Suite.

This procedure can be done within our dental practice, in the Waltham Cross and Waltham Abbey area, or, alternatively, can be done at home with professional supervision.

This procedure is one of our most popular and can dramatically transform the patient’s smile for the better in a very short period of time.

If you would like to have whiter teeth, ask us at the Lodge Dental Suite to arrange a consultation with our cosmetic dentist who will be able to recommend the best approach.
