Prevention is always better than a cure.
No one actually enjoys having an invasive dental procedure, yet many people end up having to have fillings or extractions simply due to neglect of their teeth and gums.
Over time, it is likely that some teeth will have to be restored due to wear, tear or accident; but generally speaking, the number of fillings and extractions needed can be greatly reduced with just a little care.
At The Lodge Dental Suite, we politely remind our patients from the North London areas of Enfield and Waltham Abbey of the importance of looking after their teeth on a daily basis. This care is not complicated or time consuming, yet, many people fail to carry it out effectively. By brushing with a fluoride toothpaste, and with a brush that is no more than three months old, a great deal of bacteria, food debris and sugars that have become stuck to the teeth can be removed.
The addition of dental floss is highly effective at removing any of the above offending items from between the teeth. Dental floss is cheap and we suggest that you try it. You will be surprised at what you find hidden between your teeth that may be causing decay or gum disease.
In general, we recommend that our patients see us every six months for a professional check up. Some patients, for example diabetics, may need to see us more often to keep their mouth healthy. Provided that you have a good home oral health maintenance regimen, there is every chance that you will be clear of problems and simply asked to see us again in another six months.
This is not always the case though, and even with a good home maintenance regimen, there can be tricky to reach areas of the mouth which may have been neglected and started to decay. Usually though, any problems such as this are relatively minor and a simple tooth coloured filling can be used to restore the tooth.
Gum disease and other problems
Unfortunately, sometimes we do find gum disease. This can be tricky to spot for the patient, unless they are displaying obvious symptoms such as bleeding or sore gums. If left untreated, gum disease can creep up on us, eventually leading to tooth loss. The good news though is that, if caught in its early stages, it can often be reversed simply through better cleaning, and our Lodge Dental Suite hygienists will be able to advise you of the best method to achieve this.
Although decay and gum disease are common problems, we also make a point of examining the oral cavity for any potential signs of mouth cancer. Although this is not common, some groups such as smokers are at much higher risk, and if any potential signs are detected, we will advise you to see your GP for further checks. Having good oral health is relatively easy, providing that you you follow this simple guidance. Sadly, however, many do not.
