Five Ways To Avoid Gum Disease

Both gingivitis and periodontitis can be avoided with appropriate care.

At The Lodge Dental Suite, we make a point of regularly reminding our patients from the Cheshunt and Cuffley area of the importance of looking after their gums as well as their teeth. Whilst having white and healthy teeth might be highly desirable, it is our gum health that plays a key role in ensuring that we retain our teeth for as long as possible. Periodontitis especially, can cause such damage to the bone in the jaw that it can no longer hold teeth securely in place.

To help patients keep their gums healthy, we have put together this simple guide, which, if followed, should go a long way in the prevention of gum disease.

Brush correctly – Most of us brush our teeth, but we can often improve how we do this. First of all, if your toothbrush is more than three months old (the same applies to electric toothbrush heads), throw it away and replace it. Bristles need to be straight and firm enough to effectively remove both food and bacteria from the teeth and gum line. Make sure that you angle the brush towards the gums so that bacteria is removed from just below the gum line.

Use dental floss – Despite the increase in publicity about gum disease, far too few people use dental floss. This is unfortunate as it is a very effective tool in the fight against gum disease. Stay hydrated – Water plays a surprisingly important role in combatting gum disease. The bacteria which contribute heavily towards it thrive in a dry and warm environment, such as that provided by a dry mouth. Staying hydrated will help to prevent this as well as washing away harmful bacteria.

Don’t smoke – As well as contributing heavily to many health problems, including oral cancers, smoking irritates the gums and also contributes to a dry mouth (see above). We can’t emphasise strongly enough that if you do smoke at the moment, you should do all that you can to quit as soon as possible.

Regular professional supervision – As well as making sure that you take good care to look after your gums at home, it is important to make sure that they are checked regularly by the dentist and hygienist at The Lodge Dental Suite. Hygienist visits are essential too, in order to make sure that tartar can be removed from areas of your teeth and gums that are very hard to keep clean at home. A procedure called a ‘scale and polish’ is one of the best ways to do this and will be performed by the hygienist. It is a painless and straightforward procedure that has huge benefits for your gums.
